one-off centre console
Volkswagen Caddy vans don’t come with armrests. However, with a little modification, Touran centre consoles can be used, but rather than simply swap like-for-like, I thought I’d take the opportunity to modify it and make it match the rest of the interior.
I decided to cut these cupholders out and replace with a versatile, small storage pocket for sunglasses or smaller items. To do this, I 3D printed the tray, cut out the hole in the centre console by hand, and lined the pocket with nice grey carpet.
the original small cupholders are as close to pointless as you can get.

I then upholstered the console in the same tan-colour faux leather that is used elsewhere on the interior. First, the sewing pattern was created in scrap material, the cover then cut and sewed together from this pattern, and final laying the sewed cover onto the console.
a thin scrim foam allowed a nice soft-touch finish.
The same process was carried out for the armrest, in a grey suede, with another layer of scrim foam to create a much more supple feel from the armrest.
